During this time of year, I always enjoy curling up on the couch with a cup of my favorite hot beverage and perusing gift guides for ideas. I love thinking of the gift receiver and things about them that they enjoy, hobbies, ways they love to interact with the world and what gift would be something they would enjoy. For kids, this can be challenging because sometimes they just want the latest and greatest toy or device their friend has. As an occupational therapist, I strive to find something that is going to encourage development or spark creativity. I’m delighted to share some of my latest favorite gifts for kids this holiday season!
Gifts for the littlest on your list…
A wood and silicone teething ring, wooden pull-toy, tummy-time mat, and a ball pit for hours of fun!
Gifts for those who are just starting to move around and explore their environments a bit more…
A tunnel for obstacle courses (and especially for the kiddo who went straight to walking/running!), a balance board, play mat, beach toys for wonderful winter days at the beach or digging snow and freezing water outside in the molds (!), an indoor slide, and a yoga mat with poses printed on it.
For your preschooler who is always on the go….
The scooter is always a favorite and my own kiddos still ride it years later! The mud kitchen is still a favorite as well. Burn some energy with the pogo bouncer or stomper stilt buckets and this gymnastics bar is a big hit for many ages!
Gifts for the school-age one on your list….
Kerplunk is a classic but is a new favorite addition to my therapy bag! Perplexus never gets old as well as Zoom Ball. The soccer net and skateboard will give those gross motor skills a good go. And this make-you-own eraser kit is on my 9 year old’s list!
Gifts for the teens in your life
We love these watercolor paints and this journal for painting. Origami is always so fun and this Foldology kit will surely be entertaining! The terrarium helps build imagination and sequencing skills while this hand lettering set is a great way for teens to work on their writing in an age-appropriate way! This puzzle is so soothing to look at and well, is the best thing to sit around the table doing together.
